Cadets, military and civilian personnel assigned to the Academy may use the Cadet Library. Other military personnel and civilians, upon application via letter to USAFA/DFLIB, may be authorized to use the facilities for specific periods when sufficient justification is provided. Such use of facilities can't conflict with the library's obligation to provide materials and services to cadets, faculty, and staff. Library privileges are granted to a specific individual and are not transferable. Similarly, organizations external to the Academy may also be authorized users. In such cases, since the library card is not issued to a specific individual, privileges are generally granted to any individual presenting the card.

The maximum number of library items you may check-out depends on your status:

Cadets:            30 Items

Faculty:          200 Items

Staff:               20 Items

Additional limits are placed on audio/visual items; generally five or less for a single patron.


Two weeks, with renewals generally available, unless the item is in demand with the exception of Instructional Staff.  Faculty may have most items for the academic semester, subject to recall after two weeks if needed by another patron. 

Fiction Two weeks for all patrons.
Government Documents Two weeks for all patrons.
Playaways Two weeks for all patrons.
DVDs/CDs One week for DVDs/Two weeks for CDs.
Bound Periodicals  Overnight use by faculty and cadets only.
Loose Periodical Issues Generally not loaned; exceptions must be requested at the Information Services Desk.
Reference Materials Generally not loaned; exceptions must be requested at the Information Services Desk.
Special Collections Materials Subject to separate policies; consult Special Collections staff at 333-4674.

The USAFA Library computer system allows you to request your own renewals provided that the selected items are eligible (not overdue, not on hold for other patrons, etc.).  Either some or all of the currently checked out items can be renewed. This feature allows you to extend checkouts and to prevent items from becoming overdue.

When a patron needs an item that is already checked out, they may place the item on "reserve"  When the item is returned, the patron will receive an email notification that the item has been returned and is available for checkout.  This request may be completed at any public Catalog workstation by logging in to your account. Please visit the Information Services Desk for your username/password.  You can also place an item on reserve at the Information Services Desk.

Library materials which are REQUIRED READING for specific courses may be put on reserve upon the written request of instructional staff, or the library officer of an academic department. Reserve requests (0F 716) should be forwarded to the Circulation Branch (333-4664) at least seven days before an assignment begins. Loan periods are determined by faculty.

Course Reserve materials are located at the Information Services Desk.


Interlibrary Loans (ILL)

An ILL is a transaction in which library material, or a copy of the material, is made available by one library to another. It is a courtesy extended by the lending library. If the Academic Library does not own the material needed, we can usually borrow it from another library.

How it works ~

Printed request forms (USAFA Form 0-369) are available at the Information Services Desk or in PDF format (see below). 

Before filling out request forms, you MUST check our online catalog, or where appropriate, government documents and technical reports indices & collections, to be certain we do not already own each requested item. If we own an item and it is missing, please note that on your request.

All requests must be typed or neatly printed and all blanks filled in. If any required information is not pertinent to the request, fill blank with an X. Complete and sign a separate form for EACH item requested.

Forms for reproduced materials MUST be signed before processing, per Copyright Law.

When materials arrive, we will notify you, typically via e-mail.

Document Delivery

Please submit journal article request via ILL before using Document Delivery

Document Delivery is a service to obtain materials, not including books, which are NOT available in the McDermott Library.

This service is usually used to request copies of journal articles. McDermott Library provides for the cost of purchasing document copies, but due to budget constraints this service can only be used to purchase documents that are needed immediately. Once the funds for document delivery are depleted the library will not be able to purchase document copies until the next fiscal year.

The library strives to fill every properly cited request within 48-72 hours. Requests are processed during business hours of 0700-1700, Monday through Friday.

There are two cadet printers available at McDermott Library located on the 3rd and 4th floors.  Instructions to connect wirelessly are located next to the printers.  Printers can also be used as copiers and scanners.

You can reserve a collaboration room by going to the Cadet Library homepage and clicking the Book a Space button.  You can also get help from the Information Services Desk.
