Library Information Session

Library instruction can take on a variety of formats based on assignment needs and class format. Active learning and engaging demonstrations timed with course requirements make in-class sessions more meaningful for cadets and facilitate more successful learning. Customized course guides can be created to provide resources curated specifically for your assignments (see the English 111 - Dr. Van Nort Guide for an example).

Things that can be covered in a sessions with a librarian include:

Basic Information Literacy Concepts Higher Level Information Literacy Concepts
  • Orientation to library resources
  • Introduction to the research process
  • Topic selection & search strategies
  • Critically evaluating sources and bias
  • Citation styles (MLA, APA, IEEE, etc.)
  • Disciplinary information practices
  • Scholarly communication and publishing processes
  • Evaluating methodology, data quality, bias and conflicts of
    interest in academic publications
  • Identifying dominant narratives and power structures in information systems

Course Reserve Materials

Course reserve materials are high-demand resources assigned for a specific course which are placed on limited circulation status at McDermott Library to maximize access for cadets in the course. McDermott Library maintains a physical course reserve service at the Service Desk, located on the third floor of the Library, near the west entrance. 

Materials eligible for placement on course reserve include:

  • Instructor-owned books, solutions manuals, etc.
  • Instructor-generated materials, such as lecture notes, sample exams or quizzes, homework solutions, etc.
  • McDermott Library-owned books and media

Materials that are not eligible for placement on course reserve include:

  • Items obtained through Interlibrary Loan or Prospector
  • Items already on reserve for another course
  • Non-Circulating McDermott Library items (e.g., Reference books, bound journals)
  • Special Collection items
  • Photocopies that exceed fair use without written permission of the copyright holder
  • Electronic copies

McDermott Library is not responsible for damage or loss of personal copies.

Compliance with copyright is the sole responsibility of the instructor who places the material on course reserve.

Cadets who fail to return course reserve material on time are subject to reporting and/or withdrawal of loan privileges for obstructing fellow cadets in accessing the material.

Request Course Reserves

Instructors can place readings, DVDs, solution manuals, and other high-use items assigned to a course on reserves at McDermott Library. Checkout times will be limited to maximize class access to the material. Items from the library collections and personal copies may also be placed on course reserve. At the end of the semester, library items will be returned to the collections and personal copies will be available for instructors to pickup at the Information Services Desk.
