Library Instruction

What can students learn during an instruction session?

  • Determining the amount and types of information needed to fulfill their research needs
  • Forming their research questions into manageable concepts
  • Developing keywords and complex search statements
  • Searching for books, articles, reference materials, multimedia, and more
  • Differentiating between scholarly and popular publications
  • Evaluating sources
  • Citing sources
  • Accessing the many support resources available to them, including a personal connection with a research librarian

Types of Library Instruction

Library instruction can take on a variety of formats based on assignment needs and class format. Active learning activities and engaging demonstrations tied to a specific assignment make library instruction more meaningful for Cadets and facilitate more successful learning. Library instruction can use a mix of synchronous and asynchronous methods to teach Cadets the research and information skills they need to be successful at USAFA and beyond. When you request library instruction, you and the librarian will plan a strategy specific for your course.

Placing Items on Course Reserves

Instructors can place readings, DVDs, solution manuals, and other high-use items assigned to a course on reserves at McDermott Library. Checkout times will be limited to maximize class access to the material. Cadets should check with their instructors to see if items have been placed on reserve for their course. Reserve items should be borrowed at and returned to the Information Services Desk at the McDermott Library.
