Citing Generative AI

Example from McAdoo (2024)

Reference template: [Generative AI Company]. (YYYY). [Generative AI model title] (version number) [Format]. URL
Parenthetical citation template: ([Generative AI Company], YYYY)
Narrative citation template: [Generative AI Company] (YYYY)

Example from MLA, How Do I Cite Generative AI in MLA Style (n.d.)

Works-Cited-List Entry template:

Text Acknowledgement template:

Numbered Footnote or Endnote template: [Reference number]. Text generated by [Generative AI model], [Generative AI Company], [Month DD, YYYY], URL
Author/Date template: ([Generative AI Model], Month DD, YYYY)
Bibliography template: Do not cite in bibliography or reference list unless providing publicly available link to the chat content

  • Text Acknowledgement: For most types of writing, you can simply acknowledge the AI tool in your text (e.g., “The following recipe for pizza dough was generated by ChatGPT”).
  • Numbered Footnote or Endnote: 1. Text generated by ChatGPT, OpenAI, March 7, 2023, https://chat.openai.com/chat.
  •  Author/Date: Any information not in the text would be placed in a parenthetical text reference. For example, “(ChatGPT, March 7, 2023).”
