The Revised 2018 Edition of the Style Manual for Political Science expands and updates previous information to incorporate APSA's four member-wide journals. The sections include: manuscript preparation, manuscript writing (including punctuation and style), parenthetical citations, notes, tables and figures, and additional resources.

APSA style, in most instances, follows guidelines set forth in the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition (CMS). Throughout this manual, CMS citation numbers are included in parentheses, where appropriate, to refer readers to specific sections of CMS’s 17th edition.

The Chicago Manual of Style (17 ed.) supports two different citation systems:

1. Author-Date: Typically used in the physical and social sciences, much like APA

2. Notes and Bibliography: Mostly used in the humanities, as well as in some of the social sciences

As you look for Chicago Style citation help, be sure to find out which system your work requires and refer specifically to the guidance that applies to that system. Both your in-text citations and your reference lists/bibliographies will differ according to which version you use.
